Day 12

Wednesday, we bumped into some people we had met in Talkeetna in Homer. They invited us to take the Danny J (a wooden boat) to Halibut Cove. We got to see birds and otters along the way.

We went back to Cooper Landing to hang out with Tanisha and Zack. Tanisha graduated from acupuncture school and is spending the next month in Alaska with Zack before they drive across country to Florida.

Day 11

Ocean House Inn - Homer, AK

The Ocean House Inn is an amazing piece of property! The inn used to be a triplex. Now, the owners live in the middle portion and the two sides are full of rooms. The views of Kachemak Bay are amazing. There is even a resident bald eagle.

We visited the brewery, meadery and winery. The meadery makes wine from honey and was our favorite stop.

We walked along the Homer Spit which is 3 miles of land that goes out into the bay. It is filled with tourist traps and halibut fishing charters.

Day 9

(We are having technical difficulties due to the lack of Internet connection.)

We had a big surprise this morning. Mt. McKinley was visible for the first time in 31 days! We walked down the street to the river after breakfast at The Roadhouse to see it.

We went into Denali National Park to get a closer look. We saw a moose along the way.

We stayed at a cabin named Blue Moon.

Day 10

Sunday,we went fishing with Zack and Drew's buddy from Erie that is up here. We caught a silver salmon and lots of trout. The lower Kenai River was beautiful. We saw three bald eagles and a rainbow.

Jackson is napping on my lap. He was sitting on a stair yesterday and stood up all by himself. I was glad I was there to help him. his legs are still a wobbly.

Day 8

On Friday, we made our way back south to the Kenai peninsula. We stopped at Portage Glacier for a quick hike.

Day 6

Wednesday started out a little rough. Jackson had an upset stomach and Ashleigh had a migraine that made her sick. We made it to Palmer to look at the huge produce and amazing flowers. Alaska gets so much rain and sunshine that they set records for the largest produce in the country.

We went by to see the Iditarod dogs and headquarters for the race in Wasilla. All the proceeds from the gift shop help fund the race so we bought some children's books. The Iditarod has a ceremonial start in Anchorage and then really starts in Wasilla.

Talkeetna is "Where the road ends and life begins." Isn't that how we should all live life? Talkeetna is your ideal Alaskan town - clapboard storefronts and all.

We stopped at a birch syrup producer on the way into town. It takes 100-115 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. (Maple syrup is only 40 to 1.). The birch ice cream was awesome!

Denali Brewing Company is in town. Their beer is pretty good. Ashleigh was disappointed they did not have their blueberry wheat. We ate dinner where they filmed Man vs. food eating a HUGE caribou (reindeer) burger.

When we got to town, everyone said that we should be able to see Mt. McKinley....

Day 4

On Monday, we tried to do something that Zack had never done before. We headed to Ptarmigan Creek just outside Seward. The sockeye salmon were paired up - a buck and a hen. It is almost the end of salmon season and their life. The good news is that the rainbow trout were really biting and we had the stream to ourselves.

We were in the middle of bear country. We walked through the thick forest yelling "Hey bear!" On the way back to the car, we saw where a bear had pooped on the trail. I sure am glad we did not run into him.

Today, we are headed north to Anchorage and possibly Denali. The weather is rainy and cool just like our fall at home. It feels wonderful!

Day 3

Zack took us to Quartz Creek to fly fish today. The Sockeye salmon have turned red and are spawning. You can see them in the crystal clear water. The trout and Dolly (rainbow trout) eat the salmon eggs. They also bite on painted beads. My first time ever trout fishing I caught three fish in less than 15 minutes. Drew and Zack caught tons of fish! Jackson touched his first fish.

We went to the closest grocery store which is 40 miles away. We stopped at the local brewery and had some blackberry beer and stout. We had the most amazing Chinese food for dinner. Yes, we are aware we are in Alaska.

Fun Fact: Alaskans consume more ice cream per capital than any other state in the U.S.

Jackson flipped from a sitting position to a crawling position. Maybe he will walk and crawl at the same time.

Day 2

We went fishing with Zack on the Kenai River refuge. Drew caught three trout and Zack caught two trout and a Sockeye salmon that was about to spawn. Jackson and I had a good time watching them. Jackson took a nap for ten hour of the trip.

We grabbed lunch and headed for Exit Glacier in Seward. The glacier has shrunk significantly over the years and little plants are now growing where the glacier used to be. The glacier appears blue from the minerals it has picked up along the way. All the water that is fed by a glacier is blue in color as well.

We stopped in Seward for dinner. We had King Crab and clams. It was some of the best seafood we had ever had!

Today, we are off fishing again.

P.S. I forgot to tell you that we saw two bald eagles on the river yesterday.

Day 5

Tuesday, we drove from Cooper Landing to Anchorage. We saw Dall sheep in the Turnagin Arm.

We stopped at Midnight Sun Brewing. They had a wonderful beer selection. It is probably one of the bast microbreweries we have ever been to. Don't worry. We are bringing home beer. We viscid the other brewpubs downtown Anchorage but they were not impressive.

We stayed at Lake Hood Inn which was on the lake with all the float planes. It was realty neat to see the planes take off and land. They even had head phones so you could hear ten pilots talk to air traffic control.

Alaska

Yesterday, August 13, we flew from Charlotte to Chicago to Anchorage. Ashleigh read the arrival time in Chicago instead of the departure time from Charlotte so we had to run to catch the plane. Jackson never cried the whole time we were flying (8 hours).

When we flew over the Inside Passage, it was beautiful! We could see the snowcapped mountains, glaciers and glacier fed streams. The glacier water is Caribbean blue and about 40F.

In Anchorage, we rented a car from CheapWheels. We went to a local lunch counter and ordered halibut sandwiches. The owner was the equivalent of the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld.

We drove 2.5 hours to Cooper Landing where Zack lives and works. We kept the baby up until midnight Eastern Standard Time (8 PM here). It is 4AM as we are making this post in Alaska. Jackson thinks you get up when it is light. It is dark right now from 11PM until 3:30AM.

Today, I think we are going fishing on the Kenai River.

P.S. It rains everyday here.
